Description

MARAT / SADE

Written by Peter Weiss
Translated by Geoffrey Skelton
Verse Adaptation by Adrian Mitchell
Directed by Anna Rebek
Stage Management by Jianqiao Lu
Dramaturgy by Emily Taplin Boyd

A group of patients in an 18th-century insane asylum are putting on a play about the French Revolution to impress an aristocratic audience of potential donors. When the play's call for freedom disrupts the asylum director’s notions of social progress, she brutally attempts to maintain control, as what unfolds reveals the ugliness of human behavior and the radical dream of a better future.

This visceral new exploration of Peter Weiss’ rarely-performed classic (whose unwieldy title is in full: The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade) is helmed by Anna Rebek, a second-year Directing MFA Candidate, featuring original music, a live band, and a large ensemble cast.
